take a narrower view of this species than earlier treatments, regarding it as confined to Madagascar, the Mascarenes (the type is from Mauritius) and the Comoros, while elsewhere (as
Marattia fraxinea
) it has been treated broadly and regarded as also being widespread across much of Africa. Material from Madagascar referred to
M. fraxinea
var.
salicifolia
(now
Ptisana salicifolia
Senterre & Rouhan), a taxon based on southern African material and not known to be present in Madagascar, has narrower pinnae than is typical for the sp, but is provisionally included in
P. fraxinea
. Nevertheless the species is inadequately known and requires more careful study (see remarks on the
Ptisana
page).
