A twining shrub, 4.5-6 m tall, rarely an undershrub. Leaves very variable in size, shape and texture, 3.5-22.5 x 2-17.5 cm, broadly ovate, apex usually acute, base reniform with rounded lobes, hairy on both surfaces, scabrid on the upper surface, finely hairy on the lower surface; petiole 1.7-5 cm long, densely hairy. Inflorescence solitary, axillary. Pedicel 1.2-2.3 cm long, densely hairy, bract c. 4-6 mm from the base. Flowers ± greenish brown, densely hairy. Perianth c. 5 cm long, inflated, the lower half then narrowed and abruptly reflaxed, limb slightly 3-lobed, 1.8 cm across, with dense brown spots on the inner side. Stamens 6, sessile, in the form of a ring around the stigma, anthers c. 1 mm long. Stigma 3-lobed, large. Capsule 3-5 x 1-2 cm, 6-ribbed, pubescent, dehiscing from apex. Seeds deltoid, inconspicuously reticulate, dark brown, 5-7 mm long.
