Erect, annual herb, 8-15 cm tall. Cauline leaves 4-9 x 2-6 mm, ovate, 4-5 lobed, with truncate base; lobes acuminate, as long as broad, upper antrorse, lower patent (4-5 x 2-3 mm, 4-lobed, in aestival and 5.5-9 x 3.5-6 mm, 5-lobed in autumnal). Racemes lax. Floral leaves 4-6 x 2.5-5 mm, ovate, rarely broadly ovate, 4-5 lobed, with truncate base; lobes acuminate, cuspidate-aristulate, with indurated tips, longer than broad, all antrorse (c. 4 x 2.5 mm, 4-lobed; lobes acuminate in aestival and 4.5-6 x 3-5 mm but 5-lobed, lobes cuspidate-aristulate in autumnal form). Flowers 5-9 mm long; pedicels 0.5 mm long. Calyx 3-5.5 mm long; lobes 1.5-3 x 0.5 mm, equal; tube 1.5-3 mm long. Corolla violet with dark violet streaks, throat yellow, dorsally 5-8 mm long; tube 2-5 mm long, externally pubescent especially on the upper lip and the tube. Upper lip 2-4 mm long. Lower lip 3-4 mm long; lobes oblong-spathulate, emarginate, erose-slightly notched, middle lobe largest 1.5-3 x 1-2 mm, left and right lobes unequal, left lobe 1-3 x 1-2 mm, right lobe 1.5-2.5 x 1-1.5 mm. Capsule 3-5.5 x 1-2 mm (c. 3 x 1 mm in aestival and 3.5-5.5 x 1.5-2 mm in autumnal form), oblong, retuse, shorter than the calyces, ciliate all over; cilia soft. Seeds 4-16 per capsule (4-7 seeds in aestival and 8-16 seeds in autumnal form), oblong, obtuse.
