Description: Andromonoecious shrubs and trees 2–12 m tall, monocaulous or sparsely to well branched. Leaves palmately compound, 34–100(–140) cm long (incl. petiole); leaflets 6–12, dark green above, lighter beneath, shiny to dull above, papyraceous to subcoriaceous, elliptic to obovate, sometimes narrowly so, rarely ovate, (3.5–)7.3–43.5 × (1.5–)2.3–11 cm, glabrous, the primary vein green, slightly raised above, evidently raised beneath, secondary veins 19–68 per side, weakly raised on both surfaces, tertiary veins scarcely evident, the base attenuate, rarely rounded or asymmetric, the margins entire, often undulate, minutely revolute, the apex acute, slightly acuminate or retuse to emarginate, sometimes prominently so and thus nearly obcordate; petiolules 0.8–8 cm long; petiole (14–)19–61(–96) cm long, 0.3–10.5 mm diam., the base clasping, sparsely to densely pustular lenticellate (occasionally lenticels absent), the ligulate stipule forming a collar ca. 2–15 mm high, often with a scarious margin. Inflorescence terminal, paniculate-umbellate, hemispherical, with 3 orders of branching, glabrous, medium green, inflorescence bracts broadly triangular, caducous, 4.5–5.6 mm long, the primary axis erect, 2.5–11 cm long, the secondary axes ca. 5–10, 0–2 borne laterally along the primary axis, the others forming a terminal, umbellate cluster, each ca. (4–)7–28 cm long, tertiary axes when present 13–20 per secondary axis, (0–)3–7, arranged singly and/or in 2 pairs and/or pseudo-whorls, the others in a terminal, umbellate cluster, each ca. (2–)4–10 cm long, bearing a terminal umbellule of ca. 13–26 protandrous, hermaphroditic flowers and 2–4 lateral umbellules of ca. 6–10 staminate flowers, pedicels of the hermaphroditic flowers green, often tinged red or purple below the flower, 5–22 mm long at anthesis, ca. 0.5–1.2 mm in diam., expanding slightly in fruit, those of the staminate flowers ca. 5.5–8.5 mm long, 0.5–0.7 mm in diam., subtended by ovate to broadly triangular, caducous bracts 1.4–2.7 mm long. Calyx cupuliform or forming a low collar, sometimes flanged, often shallowly lobed, ca. 3–5.8(–6.5) mm wide at anthesis, the rim 0.5–1.8 mm high, minutely apiculate (smaller in staminate flowers). Corolla hemispherical to turbinate, the petals 5–8, narrowly triangular to triangular or trulate, pale green inside, sometimes maroon outside, ca. 4.5–5.5 mm long at anthesis. Stamens 5–8, the filaments 0.9–2.9 mm long, the anthers 1.8–3.3 mm long, cream white, with 4 thecae. Ovary (5–)6–12-carpellate, cupulate to globose (vestigial in staminate flowers), 2.4–5.3 mm high, disc flat to low conical, pale green turning yellow or red when stigmas receptive, ca. 2.4–4.6 mm diam. in hermaphroditic flowers (smaller in staminate flowers), styles (5–)6–12, ca. 1.5–2.5 mm long in hermaphroditic flowers (vestigial and undivided in staminate flowers), united for ca. 1/4–1/2 of their length, the free arms 1–1.8 mm long, radiating to slightly recurved at receptivity. Mature fruit terete, green turning mottled maroon and then presumably deep purple to nearly black, ovoid or ellipsoid to globose, 4–9.5 mm high, 4–9.6 mm wide, ribbed when dry, the base rounded to truncate.
