Notes:
This species is characterized by its leaves with numerous secondary veins and abundant silky-strigose pubescence on the lower surface; shortly pedunculate, multiflowered inflorescencesw with 4-8 monochasial axes and subsessile flowers; rather short lobed calyx; corolla with the tube ca. 10 mm long and the lobes four with winged margins but without elliptic appendages; and rather small capsules, 7-20 mm long. Joosia antioquiana appears to be rather narrowly endemic in the lower Magdalena valley, where a number of other endemic Rubiaceae are found (e.g., Ciliosemina purdieana, Coussarea antioquiana). Joosia antioquiana is similar to Joosia umbellifera, which is found in the same general area but perhaps not sympatric; Joosia antioquiana has leaves with usually fewer secondary veins and less silky pubescence, generally fewer-flowered inflorescences, and corollas with 4 or more often 5 lobes with well developed elliptic appendages.
