Group: Dicot Rank: species Kind: Name with Basionym (New Combination)

Authors: Published In: American Journal of Botany 98(10): 1704. 2011. (1 Oct 2011) (Amer. J. Bot.) Name publication detail
Annotation: NOTE: The long following explanation was included by M. H. Grayum in Nov 2011 when the record was entered into TROPICOS; the interpretation presented by IPNI is that Delgado did not provide a full reference to the basionym but he did refer to the Kunth name as well as cited the type – the basionym is therefore considered to be Vigna peduncularis Fawc. & Rendle, an avowed substitute for Phaseolus peduncularis Kunth (not W. P. C. Barton). – Delgado mistakenly cited "Phaseolus peduncularis Fawcett & Rendle" as the basionym for this combination, clearly intending this to have been "Vigna peduncularis Fawcett & Rendle." The latter name has traditionally been treated as a combination based on Phaseolus peduncularis Kunth, but Delgado follows Verdcourt (Kew Bull. 56: 232. 2001) in regarding it as a new name, with priortiy dating from 1920. This interpretation hinges on the notion that P. peduncularis Kunth (1824) is an illegitimate later homonym of P. peduncularis (Muhl.) W. P. C. Barton (1818). However, it is the latter name that is illegitimate (see comments thereunder); P. peduncularis Kunth is acceptable, and must stand as the basionym of Ancistrotropis peduncularis. Therefore, Delgado's indication of a basionym is both erroneous (in citing Phaseolus peduncularis Fawc. & Rendle instead of the intended Vigna peduncularis Fawc. & Rendle) and indirect (as to the citation of Phaseolus peduncularis Kunth, the correct basionym). While indirect citation of basionyms is permitted prior to 1 Jan 1953 (ICBN Art. 33.2), Delgado's combination may be technically invalid in this respect. Another consideration: if Vigna peduncularis Fawc. & Rendle (1920) is to be accepted instead of Phaseolus pedundularis Kunth (1824) as the basionym of Ancistrotropis peduncularis, the possible existence of prior synonyms becomes a concern; Phaseolus pascuorum Mart. ex Benth. (1837) would be a prime candidate.
