Erect rhizomatous shrub, up to 1.5 m tall. Stem and branches white tomentose with reddish brown pubescence. Leaves oblong ovate to elliptic ovate, acute, acuminate, sharply toothed, hooked; 4-18 x 2-10 cm, upper surface green with scattered bristles lower surface densely grayish white tomentose with reddish brown pubescence especially on the veins, petiole 2-8 mm long, deeply pubescent, biauriculate at the base, auricles foliaceous,  elliptic ovate. Capitula in dense corymbs, radiate, heterogamous, phyllaries 4-5 mm long, campanulate, sparsely white tomentose. Ray florets 3-4, c. 7 mm long, ray 3.5 x 2 mm. Disc florets tubular, bisexual, 6-7 mm long, tube 2.5 mm long, corolla 5-lobed, lobes acute; stamens exserted. Cypsela c. 1.5 mm long, dark brown, ribbed, pappus of ray floret shorter c. 4.5 mm, of disc floret c. 6.5 mm long; bristles barbed.
