Steyermark included four species from the Guianas in this group. These species were then all tranferred to Carapichea by Taylor & Gereau (2013). Three of these species were more recently transferred to Notopleura by Lachenaud & Delprete (2022), including the type species of this series. Lachenaud & Delprete did not treat Psychotria ser. Altsonii, but the transfer of its type to Notopleura effectively transferrs this series name to synonymy under that genus.
