Notes:
This apparently deciduous species is characterized by its obovate leaves that may be pilosulous along the principal veins abaxially but are glabrous adaxially, bilobed stipules with filamentous lobes, pedunculate shortly cymose inflorescences, subsessile to perhaps shortly pedicellate flowers, well developed calyx limb with the tube ca. 1.5 mm long, and rather slender corollas with the tube longer than the lobes. This species is similar to Psychotria falamalala, which differs in its somewhat longer calyx limb and more robust corollas with the lobes equal to or longer than the tube. Also similar are in general aspect are Psychotria madagascariensis and Psychotria antsalovensis, both of which were separated from Psychotria hymenodes by Bremekamp based on their larger leaves and shorter calyx limbs. Psychotria hymenodes is also similar to Psychotria antakaranensis, which has shorter calyx limbs and stipules.
