Perennial, non tuberous,sparingly tomentose to glabrous, 30 – 60 cm tall herbs. Stem erect, cylindrical, costate, below hairy, upper part branched, branches few and leafy. Leaves linear lanceolate, 10 – 30 0.2 – 0.3 cm, entire, tapering and acute. Peduncles 6 – 10 cm long, glabrous. Capitula cylindrical, hairy, 30 4 mm at flowering, 40 7 mm in fruiting, florets 8 in each capitulum. Involucre triseriate,tomentose, Phyllaries with thin hyaline entire margin and a black protuberance at the acute apex; outer ones 2 – 4 1 – 2 mm, ovate; middle ones 6 – 10 3 – 4 mm, ovate-lanceolate; inner ones (12-)16 – 22 (-30) 3 – 4 mm, linear lanceolate. Florets yellow. Cypselas glabrous, 4-ribbed, smooth, 10 – 15 (-20) mm long, offwhite or brownish. Pappus uniseriate, plumose below and scabrous above, bristles 10 – 20 mm long, c. 40 in number, golden brown.
