 Bunchosia bifurcata A. Pool, Novon 31: 217. 2023

Small trees or shrubs, sometimes described as “arbusto voluble” or lianas, 1.5—8 m, young branchlets without lenticels, densely more or less appressed-tomentose to more or less sericeous, generally glabrescent. Larger leaves 8—17 cm de largo y (3) 4—8.5 cm de ancho, elliptic (rarely obovate), abaxial surface densely to abundantly more or less persistently tomentose, trichomes T-shaped, sessile to longest stalks 0.05—0.1 mm, longest trabeculae 0.75—2 mm, sinuous to tortuous or sometimes sinuous to tortuous and nearly straight, abaxial glands per side of midrib 0 or 1 (2) proximal and adjacent to midrib, infrequently 1 (2 or 3) more closer to margin than to midrib, most proximal 0.5—1.5 mm; stipules 1—2 mm; petioles 5—10 mm. Inflorescences from axils of older nodes with fully developed leaves present, pseudo-bifurcate, composed of a short lateral branchlet (or false inflorescence stalk) 1.5—5 (8) mm with a pair, or occasionally 2 pairs, of pseudoracemes, each developing from the axil of opposite prophylls, terminating in a large vegetative bud, and (less frequently, or) inflorescences from axils of young developing distal leaves and composed of a single, or occasionally pair, of simple pseudoracemes,  pseudoracemes 4—9.5 cm with 10—18 flowers, bracts (excluding the most proximal) 2—5 mm, lanceolate and acuminate, peduncles absent (very rarely 0.5 mm, to 1 mm in fruit), bracteoles 2—3 mm, most frequently both bracteoles per pair subtending each flower with one gland (the glands more or less equal in size), less frequently one bracteole with one or 2 glands, bracteole gland (0.5) 0.75—1.25 mm, completely positioned on bracteole, pedicel 2.5—5.5 mm (to 6 mm in fruit). Flowers with sepal glands 2—4 mm, sepals extending 0.75—2 mm beyond glands, tightly appressed to flower bud prior to anthesis, abaxial surface entirely densely appressed-tomentose or sericeous; ovary 3-locular, densely tomentose to sericeous, styles completely connate, densely tomentose to sericeous, stigma lobes 3, approximately equal, free. Mature fruit 8—12 mm de largo y 10—15 mm de ancho, 3-locular, depressed globose, with 3 (0, 2) very well-developed, rounded lobes, with scattered trichomes, granulose, dull, orange or yellow (rarely reportedly red), apex rounded or flat.

Not uncommon, bosques tropicales secos, bosques de galería, zona pacífica; 0–700 m; fl oct--dec, fr nov–dec, jun; Grijalva 1748, Stevens 10999; El Salvador and Nicaragua.

This species was included within the concept of Bunchosia biocellata Schltdl. for Nicaragua in the printed version of the Flora. Bunchosia biocellata is here considered to be endemic to Atlantic Mexico where it flowers in the early rainy season,  (Mar.) Apr.—July, and differs from B. bifurcata not only in distribution  and flowering season, but also in a number of characteristics including adaxial surface of leaves usually initially sericeous (versus tomentose), abaxial leaf surface often with a row of up to 5 glands extending from near base to 2/3 of length, inflorescences simple pseudoracemes from axils of mature leaves, peduncles present, 0.5—3 mm, bracteole glands decurrent, sepals only  pubescent proximally (and marginally ciliate), and larger mature fruit.
