Notes:
The place of publicatoin and identity of this name have long been unclear. It was first mentioned by Sprengel , who synonymized it with Hamelia ventricosa; Sprengel (1825) considered this species to be found in the Antilles and Mexico, but Elias (1976) later narrowed the circumscription of this species to include only the plants in Jamaica. Later Willdenow used this name provisionally for plants from Mexico, and validly published this name for these plants. Material of Hamelia pauciflora in the Willdenow Herbarium at B was later identified by Schumann as Hamelia patens, and this material appears (web image!) to correspond to the modern circumscription of this last species.
