This section comprises ca. 51 species that have a medium-sized to rather robust habit, laminar or sublaminar bilobed stipules, flowers that are generally sessile or subsessile in cymose groups or along developed axes, corollas of various forms, and small to rather large, usually blue or purple fruits, and pyrnes that are abaxially ridged to broadly angled. This section was named by Borhidi, who based it on Steyermark's Psychotria subg.

Distribución : At 0-3350 m in humid vegetation, with most species in the Andean region from Colombia to Bolivia and Venezuela and in southern Central America, and one species ranging widely also in Mesoamerica and the Antilles.
