Eumachia hassleriana was considered a species restricted to Paraguay until recently, when a number of unidentified collections of Rubiaceae were matched with it. Eumachia hassleriana is similar in aspect and habitat to Eumachia depauperata, and has also sometimes been confused with Eumachia cephalantha.
