This species is characterized by its glabrous tree habit, medium-sized to somewhat small (for Simira), shortly petiolate, elliptic leaves with obtuse bases and tuft domatia, pyramidal to rounded, several- to multi-flowered inflorescences, 4-merous flowers, lobed calyx limbs 0.5-0.8 mm long, tubular corollas with the tube 2-3 mm long and the lobes ca. 1.5 mm long, and and subglobose woody capsules 1-1.5 cm in diameter. This species has so far not been documented with calycophylls; the species epithet apparently refers to either the reddish purple oxidation color of its tissues or its common name, "colorado". Simira colorata is generally similar to Simira hirsuta, which differs in its hirsute pubescence.
