Shrub 1-2 m tall. Branches spreading, reddish-brown, sparsely pubescent, with stout usually straight prickles. Leaves ternate, rarely simple. Blade of leaflets lanceolate to ovate, terminal leaflet 2.5-8 x 1-3 cm, lanceolate, lateral leaflets 1-5 x 0.7-2.5 cm. Leaflets broadly cuneate at base, apex acute to acuminate, rarely obtuse, margins serrulate, leaf surface adaxially glabrous or pubescent, abaxially usually glabrous with hooked prickles mainly on midrib, rarelypubescent. Petiole 0.8-4.5 cm long, glabrous with hooked prickles. Petiolules of terminal leaflets 0.5-2 cm long, lateral leaflets with petiolules 1-2 mm long. Stipuleslinear to linear lanceolate, 4-15 mm long, usually pubescent, entire. Inflorescence racemose, terminal on short lateral branches, 2-3 flowered, or flowers solitary. Flowers ca. 1 cm in diameter. Pedicel 6-10 mm long, villous sometimes with sparse minute prickles. Bracts lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, smaller than stipules, softly hairy. Hypanthium villous. Sepals 6-8 x 2-3(-4) mm, lanceolate to triangular lanceolate, entire, pubescent, apex shortly caudate, erect at anthesis. Petals ca. 8 mm long, white, broadly ovate to oblong, soflty hairy, apex sometimes emarginate, base clawed. Stamens numerous, shorter than sepals, filaments broadened basally. Carpels numerous, slightly shorter than stamens, style sparsely villous at base. Drupetum subglobose. Drupelets orange or red, glabrous or sparsely softly hairy. Pyrenes sub-globose, deeply reticulate.
