This species is characterized by its obovate subsessile leaves, terminal cymose inflorescences, flowers borne in cymes with the terminal ones sessile to shortly pedicellate, white corollas with tubes 4-7 mm long, and medium-sized fruits. Ixora smithiana is similar to Ixora schunkeana, with larger corollas.
