Psychopterys nicaraguensis A. Pool, Novon 31: 242. 2023
Liana or woody canopy vine; young stems not seen, older stems stramineous-sericeous, the trichomes sessile to stalks to 0.1 mm, longer trabeculae straight, appressed to spreading, glabrescent leaving a scurfy under-layer then totally glabrous. Larger leaves 12.5--17 x 6—7.8 cm, oblanceolate, drying monocolored, both surfaces green-brown, youngest leaves not known, older leaves abaxial surface excluding midrib sparsely white-sericeous near base, the trichomes sessile, trabeculae straight and appressed, glabrescent to glabrous and midrib densely white and stramineous-sericeous, trichomes sessile to stalks to 0.2 mm, trabeculae mainly straight and some sinuous, appressed to spreading, glabrescent to totally glabrous, eglandular (but see petiole), the base cuneate, not decurrent, the apex rounded and then minutely apiculate or retuse, or obtuse or acute then short cuspidate; petiole 12—25 mm, young petioles not known, older petioles densely stramineous and brown scurfy-sericeous, the trichomes sessile, glabrescent to glabrous, pair of glands 0.5—1 mm present lateral at apex of petiole abutting or overlapping base of blade, prominent moderately to strongly swelling-protruding; stipules ca. 0.75 mm borne on stem near base of petiole, deciduous (or sometimes absent?). Inflorescences not known, infructescences paniculate, persistently uniformly stramineous to brown, translucent-glistening, tomentose, the trichomes sessile to stalks 0.2 mm, trabeculae mostly sinuous, spreading; pseudoracemes 20—30 mm with 10—12 flowers, bracts 0.75—1 mm, persistent, peduncles absent, bracteoles 0.35—0.5 mm, persistent, pedicels ca. 8 mm in fruit, patchy stramineous, translucent-glistening tomentose. Young fruit with sepals 1.25—1.5 mm, all eglandular, abaxially medially tomentose or pubescent overall but possibly less dense towards margins; stamen remains with filament ca. 2 mm, anther ca. 0.75 mm. Nearly mature samara butterfly-shaped, densely tomentose on and near nut totally covering surface, sparsely sericeous on wings, lateral wings ca. 25 mm high and 18 mm wide, chartaceous, base slightly corrugated parallel to veins, margin undulate, dorsal wing ca. 11 mm high and 3 mm wide, extending to base of nut, at apex not adnate to base of style; nut without crests, winglets, or projections; areole ca. 2 mm high and 2.5 mm wide, circular.
Cloud forest, norcentral; 1250—1450 m; fl not known, fr may; Rueda 17203, Stevens 23027; endemic. Un género con 9 especies, México y Centroamérica.
