Perennial, rhizomatous (rhizome horizontal or oblique) herbs with simple and stellate hairs with rosettes of leaves from the axils of which stolons are often produced. Stem solitary or branched. Leaves usually sessile, entire or serrate, usually rosulate, uppr ones if present small. Capitula homogamous, ligulate, solitary to many, on leafless scapes. Involucre with many-seriate, imbricate phyllaries. Receptacle naked. Ligules yellow, sometimes with reddish or orangish streaks outside. Cypselas homomorphic, cylindrical, 1 – 2 mm long, 10-ribbed, ribs projecting above to form somewhat crenulate, beakless apices. Pappus of uniseriate of scabrid-barbellate, fragile bristles.
A genus with 20-100 species (Mabberley, 2008), depending on species concept, distributed in Europe, Asia and N. Africa. Represented in Pakistan by the following species.
