Erect, 30 – 60 (-75) cm tall, somewhat woody, ± glabrous perennial, green shrublet. Stems many, thin, virgately much branched from woody rootstock, branches ascending, densely leafy all over, internodes striate, sparsely puberulous to glabrescent. Leaves monomorphic, sessile, lower ones often ± fascicled in leaf axils, upper erect to ± spreading, all narrowly linear, 10 – 15 mm long, 1– (–2) mm wide, entire, convolute-margined, acute. Capitula usually solitary, pedunculate, bracteate, terminal at shoot apices. Involucre narrowly funnel-shaped  campanulate or turbinate, 10 – 15 mm long, pale-green and sometimes purple, puberulous to glabrescent. Phyllaries (5–) 6 – 7–seriate, rigid, outer narrowly ovate,  inner  linear-lanceolate, 6.5 – 8 mm long, 2.5 – 3 mm broad, stiff, acute-acuminate. Receptacular bristles  linear, more or less twice as long as cypselas. Corolla pink, 10 – 12 mm long, limb as long as tube, lobes linear, ca 3 mm long. Cypselas linear, 4 (-5) mm long, ± quadrangular, dark brown, glabrous, with apical dentate-lacerate crownlet. Pappus white, inner bristles ca 10 mm long, shortly plumose, basally connate; outer bristles 3 – 4 mm long.
