Jatropha costaricensis G.L. Webster & Poveda, Brittonia 30: 265. 1978.

Arbustos o árboles, 2–8 m de alto; plantas dioicas. Hojas ovadas, en su mayoría 3 (–5)-anguladas o levemente lobadas, 5–18 cm de largo y 4–18 cm de ancho, obtusas, base truncada a subcordada, márgenes enteros, persistentemente velloso-pubescentes en el envés; pecíolos 2–9 cm de largo, pubescentes, estípulas diminutas, glandulares. Inflorescencia estaminada terminal, un dicasio 2–8 cm de largo, hírtulo, flores pistiladas terminales, solitarias o raramente apareadas; sépalos enteros; pétalos cohesionados, 5–8 mm de largo, dispersamente hirsutos por dentro, blancos; estambres 10, anteras 1–1.5 mm de largo; ovario glabro, carinado. Fruto 3-lobado, 2 cm de largo y 3 cm de ancho, distintamente carinado; semillas 17–20 mm de largo.

Rara en bosques estacionales, Matagalpa; 100–200 m; fl jun, fr oct; Rueda 2447, 3710; Nicaragua y Costa Rica.
