Annotation:
as "Lupinus Clarkei," but honoring "Dr. Clark, amerikansk Consul i Costa-Rica"; in fact, the U. S. did not open a consulate in Costa Rica until 1852, several years after Oersted had left the country, and U. S. State Department publications (see especially Smith, W. B., II, 1986; America's Diplomats and Consuls of 1776-1865) list no one named Clark or Clarke serving in Costa Rica during 1852-1867; however, one Francis V. Clark was stationed in southeastern Nicaragua (San Juan del Norte) in 1846-1847, the exact period of Oersted's travels in the region; other sources [see, e.g., Wilson, C. N. (ed.), 1993; The Papers of John C. Calhoun, Vol. XXI, 1845] confirm that Francis V. Clark was indeed a "Dr." or "M. D." (as well as a male, i.e., the "son" of Thomas Clark), and Oersted is known to have collected along the Río San Juan; thus it seems highly likely that Lupinus clarkii honors Francis V. Clark (1824-1853), originally from Pennsylvania, who died (15 Jan 1853) in Nicaragua (Diriomo, Depto. Granada) and was buried there (though Oersted did not allude to his death); spelling of epithet corrected as required by ICN Art. 60.8 (based on Oersted's spelling of the surname "Clark" and the circumstantial evidence of Clark's gender as male)
