Comment/Acknowledgements: Köhlein (Iris: 167. 1987) treats I. halophila Pallas as a distinct species.
Map Location: B-8 Kashmir, Srinagar, 5200 ft, in a garden, standard mauve, yellow at base, falls beardless, veined with mauve. This colour form is not nearly so common in the valley as the yellow forms, but both can be seen on village graves, 2.6.1983, J.D.A. Stainton 8648 (BM); Kashmir valley, Aharsal, 34.10(N, 74.50(E, 5500 ft, planted on graves, height 4 ft, flowers pale mauve, 14.6.1977, J.D.A. Stainton 7833 (K); B-8 Gandarbal, 14.6.1901, Duthies' collector 25827 (K). C-6 Kurram valley, Shalizan, 7000 ft, amongst grass near water-channels, flowers nearly white, with a slightly primrose yellow tinge, 15.6.1879, J.E.T. Aitchison 423 (BM, K).

Rhizome thick, branched. Leaves 75-100 cm ( 7-12 mm, lanceolate, almost ensiform, longer than stem. Peduncle (stem) up to 90 cm, sheathing leaves mostly lanceolate, acute, 3-4 flowers at apex, 1-2 in lateral clusters. Flowers (6-) 7-8 (-10) cm in diameter, white, dingy white-yellow or grey-purple, sometimes golden yellow; falls elliptical, narrowing abruptly into haft, which is longer than blade; standards upright; crest small. Anthers 1.4-1.8 cm long.
