Rhizomes short, the roots thickened. Aerial stems 20–70 cm long, hollow. Leaves
5–12 cm long, perfoliate near the base, somewhat lighter colored and sparsely
to densely and minutely pubescent on the undersurface. Perianth 2.5–5.0 cm
long, yellow. Fruits 8–15 mm long, the tip broadly rounded to nearly straight
across, the angles not winged. 2n=14. April–May.
Scattered nearly throughout the state (eastern U.S. and adjacent Canada west to
North Dakota and Oklahoma). Mesic bottomland and mesic upland forests in
ravines and valleys; less commonly on shaded bluff ledges or stream banks.
