Nomenclature Reason: Although sometimes thought to be validly published in Ann. Sci. Nat., Bot., sér. 3, 12(10): t. 14, f. 1 (Nov 1849) [Art. 42.3, an illustration with an analysis], this is not true because the epithet aquatica unambiguously refers to Melastoma aquaticum Aubl., Hist. Pl. Guiane 1: 430-432, t. 169 (1775) and according to Art 42.1 (b), a genus and species cannot be validly published by a single description or plate with analysis (description generico-specifica) if "names (at any rank) have previously been validly published on the same type."
