Notes:
As here circumscribed, Mauloutchia chapelieri encompasses broad variation in leaf size. The smallest leaves (ca. 5 cm in length) are exhibited by individuals at Betampona, which nevertheless overlap in size with leaves from the type of and other individuals formerly determined as M. chapelieri var. media, which in turn overlap with typical M. chapelieri, which may have leaves in excess of 25 cm in length. For now, fruit variation is also encompassed within a broadly defined M. chapelieri. Hence, M. chapelier fo. ecristata is considered to be a synonym. Some specimens from the northern part of the range near Sambava and Andapa exhibit irregular bumps on the crests of the fruit.
