Trees, 10 – 25 (-35) m tall, with 10 – 15 m wide, fairly open crown from solitary, usually straight trunk. Bark rough throughout, dark grey to black, hard, ridged and shallowly to deeply furrowed, persistent on the small branches. Leaves alternate, petiole 10 – 20 mm long, lamina lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, 6.5 – 16 x 0.7 – 1.3 cm, lateral veins indistinct, acuminate, dull, green or grey-green, concolorous. Inflorescence a terminal or axillary panicle of 7-11-flowered umbels on 4 – 15 mm long peduncles. Pedicels 2 – 6 mm long. Flowers small, 1.2 – 14 cm across, white. Buds clavate or fusiform, 4 – 6 mm long, with 2 – 3 x c. 3 mm calyptra; hypanthium hemispherical to conical, as long and broad as calyptras. Fruits pedicellate, ovoid or hemispherical, (3-) 4 – 7 x 4 – 6 mm; disc narrow, level or descending; valves 3 or 4, ± level to deeply enclosed. Seeds ovoid to compressed-ovoid, grey-brown.
