Notes: Piper pachyphyllum Sodiro is an illegitimate later homonym associated with an Ecuadorian sp. is correctly known as Piper pinguifolium C. DC.
Crop Wild Relative: This species, like others in the genus, is related to the cultivated spice crop Piper nigrum - the source of dried white and black pepper, and the green peppercorns of commerce, and which are cultivated in Madagascar. Locally this and other species of the genus are collected from wild sources and used as a substitute for the cultivated species, and have been commercialized on a small scale.
