Flowering stems 30–100 cm long, hairy. Leaf sheaths usually
minutely hairy, the ligule 0.5–1.0 mm long. Leaf blades 3–20 cm long, 5–15 mm
wide, minutely hairy. Inflorescences 3–16 cm long, with 2–9 spikelike racemes,
these 2–7 cm long. Spikelets 4.0–5.2 mm long, occurring mostly singly along the
axis of the raceme (paired only toward the base), elliptic‑ovate in
outline, narrowed to a blunt or sharp point at the tip, not tapered. Upper
glume 3.8–5.0 mm long, elliptic‑ovate, narrowed to a blunt or sharp point
at the tip, not tapered, awnless, 5‑ or 7‑nerved. Sterile floret
with the lemma 3.8–5.2 mm long, elliptic‑ovate, narrowed to a blunt or
sharp point at the tip, not tapered, awnless, 5‑nerved. Fertile floret
with the lemma 3.5–5.0 mm long, elliptic, angled to a broad point at the tip,
but awnless. 2n=54. August–October.
