Nomenclature Reason: "nom. nov." Based on ~Stipa occidentalis~ Thurb. 1874, p.p., with the one Wilkes expedition specimen cited by Thurber accepted as the type of that illegitimate name, and there by lectotypifying the name as excluding the other material cited by Thurb. ex S. Watson.
