4b. var. octoflora

F. octoflora var. aristulata L.H. Dewey

Spikelets 5.5–10.0 mm long (excluding the awns), mostly with less than 9 florets. Lemmas with the body 3.5–6.5 mm long, the awn 2.5–9.0 mm long. 2n=14. April–June.

Common to scattered in the southern half of the state (nearly throughout the U.S. and adjacent Canada and Mexico, most commonly in the southern U.S.). Dry upland forests, glades, and prairies, usually on acidic substrates; also pastures, fallow fields, mine spoils, roadsides, railroads, and open, dry, disturbed areas.
