Annotation: GrassBase (accessed 2016) treats this as a combination based on Panicum alopecuroides L., but there is no connection to Panicum alopecuroides L. (1753). In fact Linnaeaus changed his concept of Panicum alopecuroides in the Mantissa (1771) to a plant with plumose bristles (See Chase, 1921, p. 222) and this is presumably the basis of Thunberg's plumose bristled Cenchrus alopecuroides. This blocks the use of "alopecuroides" in Cenchrus for the plant long known as Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng.
