Note: Description is word for word same as description of ~P. cuspidata~ Nutt in Barton, Compend Fl. Phila 1: 61 1818 July 9 [IGS] ~P. pugens~ on Apr 3 but nom. illeg. Poa pungens is a suggested alternative name by Nuttall for his accepted Poa autumnalis Muhl. ex Elliott. On page 66 he notes that "Pungens would perhaps have been a better name for this early flowering vernal grass.
