Description Trailing or twining vines. Leaves oblong-ovate to suborbicular, shortly acuminate, deeply cordate, the sinus narrow and the lobes converging, pubes- cent or glabrate on both sides, 2-5 cm long and 1.5-4.0 cm wide; petioles 1.0- 2.5 cm long. Inflorescence umbellate, to 35-flowered; peduncles 1.5-6 cm long; pedicels slender, to 3 cm long. Flowers with the calyx lobed to the base, the lobes linear to ovate, ca. 2.5 mm long, puberulent outside, glabrous within; corolla whitish, subrotate, the tube ca. 2 mm long, the lobes lanceolate, obtuse, reflexed, ciliate, puberulent inside, glabrous outside, 5-7 mm long and 3-3.5 mm wide; corona 5-vesicular, each vesicle pyramidal, widest below the middle, ca. 3 mm high, free from the annular ring; gynostegium + cylindrical, shorter than the corona, ca. 2.5 mm high. Follicles to 8 cm long, 2 cm in diameter, puberulent, striate.
Distribution This is a primarily lowland species which ranges from Mexico to Colombia and Venezuela.
Note The Panamanian material is similar to what Holm referred to as subsp. lindenianum, but cannot be regarded as distinct from the typical sub- species. Holm cited Wedel 1755 as a putative hybrid between subsp. bilobum and subsp. lindenianum.
