Nomenclature:

1. Azolla filiculoides Lam., Encycl. 1: 343 (1783). Type: Argentina, Straits of Magelan, Comerson s.n. (P?). [Plate 7]

Common name: Water Fern; אזולה שרכית.
Habitat: Floating in fresh water springs. Sharon Plain, Golan. A very rare alien, suspected to escape from aquaria or gardens.
Area distribution: Origin tropical America, naturalized in Europe, cultivated and sub- spontanous.
Notes:

Grown sometimes in of pools and ponds in order to clear the water from algae and poisonous minerals.

    Remnants of Azolla, dated about 800,000 yrs, were found in excavations in the Upper Jordan Valley. Likewise, hunreds of female sporangia (sporocarps) sometimes together with male spores, and massulae, of Azolla sect. Euazolla were found at Lower Paleolithic in Gesher Benot Ya’aqov (Hula Plain) [Melamed & al. 2011].

Moss-like ferns, 1-10 cm. Leaves ovate, elliptical to suborbiculr, green becoming reddish, deeply 2-lobed, upper lobe subacute or obtuse, trichomes on the leaves are 1-cellled. Sori ovoid or globose, 2 mm; massulae 5-8, covered with non septate  glochidia.
