Type:

Type: Peruvia, Described from plants cultivated at the Botanic Garden in Paris from seed sent by D. Dembey (fide Canne, Rhodoro 79: 373. 1977).

Distribution:

Central, North and South America, introduced and naturalized in Europe; Africa, Asia and Australia.

Comment/Acknowledgements:

A fairly common species, grows between 1800–2700 m a.s.l. in moist places, open slopes, along roadsides and also as a weed in fallow lands and gardens.

Annual, 30–80 cm tall, erect, herb. Leaves opposite on 1–2.5 cm long petiole, lamina ovate–lanceolate, 2.5–4 cm long, 0.5–2.5 (–3)  cm wide,  serrate to serrulate, attenuate at base, glabrous or hairy. Capitula radiate, ca 7 mm across, on thin peduncles. Involucre campanulate. Phyllaries, persistent, herbaceous, biseriate, outer ones 5–6 mm long, narrowly lanceolate, middle ones 2.5–3 mm long, inner ones 5–7, ovate, 3–4 mm long, Receptacle conical,  paleae 3–fid, persistent, scarious. Ray florets few, upto 8, usually whitish or pink, female,  fertile, corolla  tube  pilose, ca 3 mm long, ligule obovate to oblong, 0.5–1.5 mm long, usually 3–lobed. Disc florets upto 50, bisexual, fertile, corolla yellow, ca 3 mm long, tube shorter than cylindric limb, pilose, limb 5–lobed, deltate. Anthers yellow. Style branches apically acute.  Cypselas dimorphic; of  ray florets curved,  obconical, blackish, ca 1.5 mm long, pappus absent or of small, ± fragile scales; disc cypselas angular, upto 2.5–3 mm long, pappus of 15–20, fimbriate, lanceolate scales.
