Type:

Lectotype: Designated by P. D. Sell in Watsonia 13: 301. 1981. Described from W. Europe. Herb. Clifford: 389, Lapsana 1, sheet A (BM # 000646889).

Distribution:

NW Africa, Europe, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Russia, C. Asia, Pakistan, India; introduced in Australia.

Comment/Acknowledgements:

Usually grows as a weed in fields, orchards, gardens in moist to semi-dry loamy or gravelly soils, upto 3000 m.

The milky juice of Nipplewort is said to be soothing to sensitive skin, particularly on the nipples of nursing mothers in America and Europe.

Plants generally annual and usually single-stmmed. Lateral lobes of leaves not as wide as terminal segment. Capitula upto 20 mm across. Phyllaries 5 – 7 (-8) x 2 – 4 mm, greenish. Ligules c. 1.5 times as long as inner phyllaries.
