Comment/Acknowledgements:

Occurs in alpine scree, alpine moist stony mountain slopes amidst stones, near glaciers, among gravel along streams, from 2700 to 5700 m.

Powdered leaves and capitula are used to cure backache, and purification of blood and lung infections. Aerial parts are used for kidney ailments, cough and cold.

Erect, 6 (-10) cm tall, caespitose, unbranched, densely white hairy polycarpic perennial with several, ± succulent, densely leafy, short stems originating from branched rootstock, copiously covered with previous years brownish-black petiolar remains. Leaves rosette and cauline, densely white tomentose, shortly purplish-petioled, variable in size and shape, linear-laneolate to narrowly spathulate or oblong-spathulate, (5-) 10 – 20 (-25) mm long, 2 – 6 (-8) mm wide, basally attenuate, margins nearly entire or shallowly obtuse –crenate toothed, apices obtuse; uppermost leaves  sessile, somewhat patent, partially enveloping  the capitula, glabrescent, brownish-tinged beneath. Capitula  small, subspherical, sessile, 5-20, densely congested in a capitate, 3 – 5 cm wide cluster or synflorescence at flat to convex apices of stem and surrounded but not concealed by uppermost involucel of leaves and wool-like hairs. Involucre oblong or cylindrical, 6-8 mm wide, densely lanate.  Phyllaries 3 – 4-seriate, thin, pale to light purplish-brown, acute and dark brown strigose at apices; outer ovate-oblong, 6 – 8 mm long, 2 – 3.5 mm wide; median and inner phyllaries  narrowly ovate-elliptic to ± oblong, 8 – 9 mm long, 1.5 – 2.5 mm wide. Receptacle with up to 1.5 mm long bristles. Corolla pink-purple or ± bluish-purple, 8 – 10  mm long, tube 4 – 5 mm long, limb as long as tube with 2 – 2.5 mm long, spreading lobes. Anther appendages fimbriate or white ciliate. Cypselas oblong  to obconic, 3 – 4 mm long, pale-brown, smooth. Pappus biseriate, dark grey  brown to blackish, outer bristles 2 – 4 mm long, inner bristles 8 – 10 mm long, plumose.
