Distribution:

Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, China (Xinjiang) and South Eastern Russian.

Comment/Acknowledgements:

The plant is used as food in famine by people living in mountains of Jhalawan-Kalat area where it grows in gravelly-sandy-loam soil.

Tuberous, tomentose, 10 – 18  (-20) cm tall herb. Tuber globose, 2.5 cm diameter; root collar fibrous and woolly. Stem branched, tomentose. Leaves linearly filiform , tomentose, entire, acute, recurved; radical leaves arranged in a rosette, 13 x 0.1cm; upper cauline leaves alternate, 4 – 7 x 0.1 cm. Peduncle 2 – 3 (-5-6) cm long, tomentose. Capitula 2 x 0.5 cm at flowering and enlarged to 3 – 5 x 1 cm at fruiting stage, cylindrical. Involucre tomentose. Phyllaries triseriate, entire, membranous; outer ones ovate-lanceolate 4 – 7 x 4 – 5  mm,  acute-obtuse; middle ones oblong-lanceolate,10 – 18 x 4 – 5 mm,  acute-obtuse; inner ones 25 – 32 x 3 – 4  mm, linear lanceolate, obtuse. Florets yellow. Cypselas 9 – 12  mm long, 8-ribbed, glabrous,ribs with few rounded teeth, white. Pappus biseriate,  bristles 35-40, 20 – 35 mm long, plumose below, scabrous above, silky white.
