Perennial, rhizomatous up to 150 cm tall glabrescent herb. Leaves variable, petiolate in the lower part, gradually becoming sessile in the upper part, 1-20 x 0.5-5 cm, lower ones oblong, obovate or elliptic to ovate, entire or sublyrate or profoundly sinuate-dentate, upper cauline leaves smaller, oblong or sublyrate, entire, irregularly dentate. Capitula heterogamous, radiate, 1.5-3 cm across, arranged in lax corymbs, peduncles, 1-4 cm long with small bracts. Phyllaries 11-13, narrowly oblong to ovate, 2-5 mm long, black tipped. Ray florets yellow, 8-12 (-15), 10-20 x 3-5 mm. Disc florets many, yellow, 6-10 mm long. Cypsela 2.7-3.5 x 0.5-0.7 mm, ± 10-ribbed, oblong, cylindric. Pappus bristles many, scabrate, 4-8 mm long.
