Notes:
Phylica is not well-collected in Madagascar, and the taxonomy is not clear - variation clearly exists based on the morphology of the specimens currently available, and may permit more than a single taxa to be recognised. The genus shows a surprising disjunction between the Andringitra and Itremo mountains on the central plateau, and near Moramanga on the eastern escarpment, and this too requires further study. A specimen in TROPICOS from Andohahela (Humbert 13657 TAN) requires confirmation. The relationship with material from the African mainland is unclear, but provisionally we accept that conspecific material does exist in Africa, but this requires further investigation. Note also that var. nyassae from Tanzania was not validly published.
