(2706) To conserve Rubus parviflorus Nutt. against R. parviflorus Weston (Rosaceae). Proposed by D.H. Goldman in Taxon 68: 868–869. 2019. Votes: 12–2–3 (recommended).
Rubus parviflorus Nutt. is a widespread North American species of thimbleberry (Rubus subg. Anoplobatus (Focke) Focke). It has been naturalized in Europe and is of economic value. Van de Beek (in Adansonia 38: 35–53. 2016) noticed that a pre-Linnaean Tournefort name had been validly published in 1770 as R. parviflorus Weston. His lectotypification ensured that that name is a younger synonym of R. sanctus Schreb., an eastern Mediterranean blackberry species (Rubus subg. Rubus), which is the only Rubus species native to the island of Crete. Therefore, R. parviflorus Weston will not be used in future, whereas losing the use of R. parviflorus Nutt. would require the substitution of the synonym R. nutkanus Moc. ex Ser. Rubus nutkanus was accepted in some older literature, but has been adopted by only one recent author. The recent Flora of North America treatment uses R. parviflorus and does not even list R. nutkanus as a synonym. This proposal will avoid confusion and has no expected negative effects.
