Perennial herbs 3-50 cm tall with rhizomes 5-9 mm thick. Flowering stems erect to ascending. Stems and petioles glabrous to densely pilose with patent or reflexed, adpressed hairs. Leaves basal and cauline. Petioles of basal leaves 1-15 cm long, glabrous to densely pubescent with patent to reflexed hairs. Stipules of basal leaves papery, brown, up to half the length of petiole, acute to lacerate at apex. Basal leaf blade reniform to orbicular, 1-5(-6) x 1.5-6(-7), adaxially glabrous to sparsely pilose, abaxially glabrous (apart from apex of veins) to densely long hirsute or adpressed pilose, leaf base truncate to cordate, margin 5-9-lobed. Lobes semi-elliptic to cuneate, sometimes overlapping, with 3-7 teeth on each side, lobe sinus toothed or entire. Teeth obtuse mucronulate to narrowly lanceolate, sometimes penicillate at apex, all equal or becoming smaller at lobe apex, sometimes incurved. Cauline leaves usually 3-5, similar to basal leaves, becoming smaller towards the stem apex with shorter petioles and conspicuous, green, leaf-like stipules. Inflorescences few-branched with erect to flexuous, glabrescent to pilose branches; flowers few to many in dense glomerules or loose heads (occasionally solitary). Pedicels glabrous, longer or shorter than the flowers. Flowers green or yellowish-green, 2.5-3.5 mm in diameter, glabrous to sparsely pilose. Sepals ovate, acute to obtuse, sometimes bearded at apex. Epicalyx lobes ovate to linear-lanceolate, acute to obtuse, sometimes bearded at apex, usually equalling or shorter than the sepals. Achene usually 1, brown, ovoid, the apex protruding from the mouth of the hypanthium at maturity.
