Scandent shrub, 1-3 m tall. Branches purplish brown to brown, glaucous, glabrous with straight to curved prickles with robust base. Leaves usually ternate, rarely pinnate with 5 leaflets. Blade of terminal leaflet ovate, broadly ovate to suborbicular, often 3-lobed, 2.5-7.5(-10) x 2-5(-9) cm, blade of lateral leaflets ovate to elliptic-lanceolate,2-6(-10) x 1-2.5(-5) cm, base broadly cuneate to rounded, apex acute or acuminate, margin unevenly coarsely to doubly serrate, leaf surface adaxially appressed pubescent, abaxially densely white-grey tomentose with sparse minute prickles along midvein. Petiole 2-4(-8) cm long, glabrous or pubescent, with few curved prickles, petiolules of terminal leaflets(0.5-)1-2.5(-3.5) cm, lateral leaflets subsessile. Stipules narrowly lanceolate to linear, 6-8 mm long, sparsely pubescent and glandular. Inflorescence usually terminal, rarely axillary, 4-6 cm long, corymbose, usually 2-8 flowered or flowers solitary or 2-several in leaf axils. Flowers 1.2-2(-2.5) cm in diameter, drooping. Pedicel (1-)2-3 cm long, glabrous, with prickles. Bracts linear to narrowly lanceolate, 4-7 mm long, glabrous or rarely pilose. Hypanthium glabrous, sometimes with prickles. Sepals ovate to broadly ovate, 6-8(-9) x 5-7 mm, entire, erect to spreading at anthesis, adaxially pubescent, abaxially glabrous, sometimes with prickles, apex acute to acuminate. Petals 7-8(-10) mm in diameter, white, glabrous, obovate or suborbicular, caducous. Stamens ca. 4 mm long, numerous, filaments linear, broader at base. Carpels shorter than stamens. Drupetum globose, 1-1.5 cm in diameter. Drupelets orange or yellow, tomentose at the apex, styles densely tomentose and persistent. Pyrenes reniform, densely rugulose.
