Notes : This species is characterized by white corollas 7-8 mm long and dry fruits 4-5 mm long. As noted in the genus web page, this species is notably variable morphologically in features such as pubescence, leaf size and number, form of the leaf blade. and number of heads in an inflorescence. A number of infraspecific taxa have been named, but have been recently synonymized by most authors. The status of Cephalanthus salicifolius, whether a distinct species or a well-marked form, has been regarded differently by different authors but so far not studied in detail.
Distribution : Lower elevations, generally 0-50 m, in humid temperate swamps, on riversides, and along watercourses in various vegetation formations, in eastern North America from eastern Canada through the eastern and central US and also in California, through Mexico to northern Central America, from Belize and Guatemala to Honduras. This species is frequent in many areas of its native range, and is cultivated rather widely in temperate regions as an ornamental and also planted to stabilize banks in areas subject to flooding and water damage.
