Cinchona micrantha can be recognized by its relatively thin-textured, usually broad leaves, its expansive multiflowered inflorescences, and its small white flowers with the corolla tube 5-7.5 mm long. This species is similar to C. pubescens, which is much more widespread and common. In fruit these can be difficult to separate; Andersson (1998) characterized C. micrantha as more often having the leaves broadest above the middle with appressed or sparse pubescence on the lower surface, vs. broadest at or below the middle and with usually spreading pubescence in C. pubescens. These species also differ in their flowers, with the calyx limb longer and also the corolla longer and usually pink to purple in C. pubescens. Also similar is C. villosa, but that can be recognized by its usually villous or hirtellous leaves and its slightly larger flowers, with the corolla tube 6-9 mm long.
