Notes: This species is not widely encountered but is apparently locally common. It is simiar to Hamelia patens but can be separated from that by its generally smaller stature and leaves, pubescent inflorescence and corollas, and well developed calyx lobe.
Distribution: Wet vegetation, apparently mainly in swampy thickets and marshes, at 0-600 m on the Caribbean slopes of southern Mexico through western Panama.
