This species was synonymized wtih Ladenbergia macrocarpa by Andersson (1997), but he later separated it in a more detailed study of the Ecuadorian species of Ladenbergia (Andersson, 1999). The type locality has not been entirely clear due to some confusion in citation of the type material in the protologue. Andersson clarified thst this species is found in southern Ecuador, and it has recently been collected also in north-central Peru.
