Notes: This species is rather robust, in particular in its rather large leaves and flowers. It is similar to Ladenbergia pavonii, but differs in having the leaves glabrous to sparsely appressed-pubescent below, the calyx limb longer (5-7 mm), and the corolla lobes longer (19-30 mm), vs. the leaves sparsely to densely hirtellous below, the calyx limb shorter (2.7-3.1 mm), and the corolla lobes shorter (12-17 mm) in L. pavonii. Ladenbergia epiphytica is also similar to L. heterophylla, however L. heterophylla can be separated by its smaller flowers, with the corolla tube 38-50 mm long, and leaves that are plane, vs. the corolla tube 65-75 mm long and the leaf margins thinly revolute in L. epiphytica.
Distribution: In wet forests at 0-2750 m, Costa Rica to northwestern Ecuador. Some plants from southern Ecuador have been included in this species, but recent study shows that these plants do not belong to Ladenbergia heterophylla.
