Lectotype designated by Gustafsson, Brittonia 50: 459, 1998: MA, isolectotypes B destroyed, F, MA; Gustafsson cited Steyermark, Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 23: 326, 1972, as having designated the B specimen as the lectotype, but this is a misinterpretation: in this work Steyermark documented only that he had seen type material to confirm the species identities, and here he reported he had seen a photo of type material at B, which he knew had been destroyed long before so this could not be considered a lectotype
